No decision on train fare hike yet: BD Railway Minister
Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan inspected the work of double line on Tongi-Gazipur route today on Tuesday. At noon at Joydevpur junction. The minister said this at Joydevpur railway junction while inspecting the work of the double line running on the Tongi-Gazipur route on Tuesday afternoon. At this time, he said that the double lane will be opened from Tongi to Joydevpur Junction by next December.
The railway minister also said that the fares for sea and road transport have been negotiated and coordinated with the leaders. A decision has not been taken yet to increase the train fare due to the increase in oil prices. However, discussions are going on with the concerned persons.
Bangladesh Railway Additional Director General (Infrastructure) Kamrul Islam, Double Lane Project Director Nazneen Ara, Gazipur Additional Deputy Commissioner Nasreen Parveen, NDC Masudur Rahman and others were present along with the minister.
Later, the director of the double lane project, Nazneen Ara Keya, told reporters that in December 2019, the process of upgrading the railway from Kamalapur to Joydevpur Junction in Dhaka to four lanes has started. 30 km from Kamalapur to Tongi and 12 km from Tongi to Joydevpur Junction. The double lane will be operational from Tongi to Joydevpur by December.
Indian contractor Fcon Kalpataru is implementing the double line project. The cost of the project is estimated to be around 1 thousand 300 crores. Again increasing the bus fare will put a lot of passenger pressure on the train. Train fares will be adjusted to accommodate this.
He said that although the fares of sea and road transport have been discussed and adjusted with the leaders, no decision has been taken to increase the train fares. Discussions are going on with the concerned parties.
