After long six decades people of 13 villages of Mogban Union of Sadar Upazila of Rangamati got electricity. Electricity connection was officially given to these villages yesterday Thursday. Hill Rangamati Member of Parliament Dipankar Talukdar inaugurated the electricity connection from Morghona Smriti Mandir area. The people of this area are very excited to get electricity after a long time.

Yesterday afternoon around 4:30 pm, the inauguration ceremony of providing electricity connection was organized at Banvanter Memorial Temple in Morghona on Asambasti-Kaptai road in Rangamati city. Former Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad Arun Kanti Chakma, Project Director of Bangladesh Power Development Board Ujjal Barua, Assistant Engineer Manik Chakma and Vice Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad Durgeshwar Chakma and others were present at the event.

Among the villages that got new electricity connections are Bilaichari Para, Mogban, Banvantre Smriti Mandir area, Morghona, Baradam, Jivatali and Kamilachari. More than six thousand people live in these villages.

Talking to some villagers, it is known that those 13 villages were established in 1960 as refugees due to construction of Kaptai dam. Electricity connection was supposed to be provided for these refugee families from Kaptai hydropower plant but it was not implemented. However, after a long wait of 62 years, they expressed their happiness after getting electricity.

Arun Kanti Chakma, head teacher of Baradam Surbala Vidyapeeth said, ‘After 62 years electricity connection was given to our village. For now Morghona, Baradam and surrounding areas have been given electricity connection. Wire-pole connection has been provided in other villages. Many locals have not yet applied for meter or electricity connection. That is why the electricity connection is off in those villages. However, I have heard that the connection will be started only if you apply for connection at home.

Sources of Rangamati Electricity Office have informed that the work of electricity connection project in 13 villages of Rangamati Sadar Upazila Mogban Union started at the end of 2018 under the power distribution system development project of three hill districts. The cost of this project was estimated at 1 crore 14 lakhs.
