The cameras will monitor vehicles in a 3 km Padma Bridge area
Two state-of-the-art PTZ (Pan-Tilt Zoom Camera) cameras have been installed to increase surveillance on the toll plaza and toll plaza road at both ends of the Padma Bridge. The camera will rotate evenly around and record video. With the help of that camera, the vehicles of at least three kilometers of the road in front of the toll plaza will be kept under surveillance. Apart from this, 34 common CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor the activities inside the toll plaza.
According to Bangladesh Bridge Authority sources, Padma Bridge was inaugurated on June 25. Since the day after that, people are crossing the bridge with vehicles. On an average, 15,000 to 16,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. Six booths each have been kept active in the toll plaza to collect vehicle toll. But no CCTV cameras were installed to monitor the coming and going of 15-16 thousand vehicles.
In the past one and a half months, buses and trucks hit the barriers and toll booths at the toll plazas of Jajira and Mawa ends several times. A passenger also died in an accident in front of the toll plaza at Jazira end. Four people lost their lives in two accidents on Padma Bridge. Several incidents of overturning of trucks and buses have also taken place. Traffic congestion often occurs on the road in front of the toll plaza when the traffic pressure increases.
In such a situation, the Bangladesh Bridge Authority took the initiative to increase surveillance on the toll plaza and the road in front of it. On August 9, Korean Expressway Corporation, the contractor for the toll collection of Padma Bridge, installed 17 and 34 CC cameras at the toll plazas at Jajira and Mawa ends. Apart from this, two modern PTZ cameras have been installed at the two ends of the toll plaza. The camera will rotate evenly. Vehicles can be monitored up to 3 km on straight roads. And if the road is curved, it will save a clear video image of one kilometer area around.
Ahmed Zibul, engineer of the toll storage system of Korean Expressway Corporation, the contractor for collecting Padma Bridge tolls, told Prothom Alo that PTZ cameras have been installed in the toll plaza area to ensure greater security. Apart from this, 34 more CCTV cameras have been installed at Jazira and Mawa ends of the bridge. If any kind of disturbance happens in the Padma Bridge area, it will be easily caught on camera. Accidents happen at various times in Padma Bridge area. This camera can easily identify how the accident happened. Due to its installation, the toll plaza area of Padma Bridge has become safer than before.
Partha Sarthi Biswas, assistant engineer of the bridge authority, told Prothom Alo that the work of installing surveillance system cameras on the bridge is underway. It will be launched by next December. With that camera, the bridge will be kept under surveillance, below and all around. And now the toll system contractor has installed CC cameras to monitor the toll plaza activities and road vehicles.
